Description and Duties
The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) of New York City is seeking a consultant/urban archaeologist. The Archaeological Repository is a project of the Archaeology Department of the LPC. Opened in 2014, the purpose of the Repository is to curate the city’s archaeological collections and to make them accessible to archaeologists, researchers, teachers, students, and the public through http://www.nyc.gov/archaeology. The Repository currently houses hundreds of thousands of artifacts from over 38 sites throughout the city and is open by appointment to researchers and scholars.
Under the supervision of LPC’s Director of Archaeology, the Consultant/Urban Archaeologist will help to incorporate and fully catalog historic artifacts from the 7 Hanover Square excavations. Work will include verifying and cataloging. The Consultant/Urban Archaeologist will need to become familiar with the 7 Hanover Square excavation report and all associated documentation to understand where artifacts were found and how they were described and then ensure that they are correctly labelled and described using the current repository standards so they will be accessible through nyc.gov/archaeology. They will be trained in how to use the Repository systems. The work may also include helping with associated Repository projects such as pulling objects for researchers or developing related on-line exhibits. The work will occur in the repository at 114 W 47th Street in Midtown Manhattan. Please note that this is a part-time position that is funded for a period of fourteen months.
