    In this position, you will serve as an Historic Preservation Specialist for Region 2 in New York, NY or Albany, NY. Typical assignments include:

    Receiving proposed federal actions in the applicable system and triages to determine Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act review actions required; reviewing FEMA or Applicant actions for Section 106 compliance during the Response to and/or Recovery from disasters; and for Mitigation, Security, and other non-disaster actions; working independently and within a team to support multiple and varied collective efforts (sometimes simultaneously) while adhering to set schedules and priorities; conducting analysis to document impacts to cultural and historic resources; writing consultations, reports, documents, findings and determinations, and National Historic Preservation Act portion of Records of Environmental Consideration (RECs).

    The Department of Anthropology at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a full time Assistant Professor of Anthropology. The Assistant Professor of Anthropology will be required to teach courses in Historical Archaeology, Introductory Archaeology, and upper division courses in an analytical specialty and courses in Afro-Latino/Latin American Studies based on subject expertise, and other upper-division Anthropology courses as needed. This hire will be housed in the Department of Anthropology and create curriculum in support of developing Afro-Latino and/or Latin American Studies within our department’s offerings. Responsibilities also include student advisement duties and co-management of the archaeology lab space and collection with existing archaeology faculty.

    The Department of Sociology and Anthropology invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Anthropology beginning Fall 2024. The faculty at Farmingdale State College has three workload components: teaching, research and scholarly activity, and service. The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory courses alongside other upper-division courses. We are especially interested in applicants who can teach and have research expertise in Indigenous Studies, Caribbean Cultures, and/or Medical Anthropology.     In 2026, the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of the United States will be celebrated. Organizations are preparing for this anniversary in various ways at local, regional, and national levels. The Indigenous America 250 initiative was created in collaboration with the National Parks Service and the Tribal and Cultural Affairs and the History and Preservation Assistance units in Interior Region 1 (IR1), which spans the area from Maine to Virginia. It is administered by ATW Research + Consulting, with Alyssa Mt. Pleasant, PhD as the Lead Scholar.

    The Indigenous America 250 initiative focuses on researching and sharing the diverse experiences and perspectives of Indigenous peoples on their own terms. As a community-engaged and collaborative effort, IR1 is working with Native experts to identify significant stories. The goal is to elevate stories that center Indigenous peoples and their experiences, introducing important individuals, places, and events into larger, public conversations about the Revolutionary War and its significance.

    An undergraduate student with experience in historical research is sought for the second phase of study of Indigenous America 250 to assist with outreach efforts related to multiple aspects of the initiative. Outreach includes, but is not limited to, social media promotion of Indigenous America 250 launch in October 2023, Storymakers summer internship opportunity, and other research/training and/or capacity-building opportunities. They will also help coordinate outreach efforts to advisors, consultants, and Indigenous communities and organizations by supporting field trip/site visit scheduling and planning. Additionally, they will assist with reading groups and seminars, and assist researchers and post-doctoral scholars with citations and secondary literature. This work is part of a larger project centered on Indigenous histories during the Revolutionary War period and related to its aftermath, leading to a published study on the topic.

    Qualifications

    An undergraduate student with the ability to conduct historical research, including assisting researchers and scholars with creation of bibliographies and citations related to Indigenous peoples and the Revolutionary War. An organized individual who can help compile and organize historical and NAIS scholarship, NPS reports, and published materials.
    Experience with social media promotion, including generating content, scheduling posts, and monitoring social media accounts associated with the initiative. Strong documentation skills to support interviews by taking notes and/or facilitating recordings.

    To be eligible, applicants must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking academic program or recently graduated (within the past 12 months) and be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident. Interns are not eligible to work more than 1200 hours total in the program; previous interns must stay within this overall limit. Able to conduct survey of scholarship related to Indigenous peoples and the Revolutionary War, develop bibliographies focused on research topics related to the Revolutionary War and its aftermath that have been identified and/or prioritized by tribal/Indigenous communities, and assist with original research in archives/libraries/museums.

The candidate will be primarily field-based, working on individual projects throughout New York State, but may also be responsible for other aspects of cultural resources projects, including report drafting, data entry, site file reviews and site photography.

    Curtin Archaeological Consulting, Inc. (https://www.curtinarch.com/) is seeking resumes from people in the Albany-Saratoga-Glens Falls, Upper Hudson region who are interested in temporary archaeological fieldwork positions during Spring 2023. The project is a Phase 3 data recovery (excavation) that is running for three to four weeks in May 2023, beginning May 1. Students ending the spring semester will be eligible to join the excavation later in May. The rate of pay is $17.00-$20.00, depending upon education and experience.

    The archaeological site is located near Saratoga Lake and has evidence of a Middle Woodland period occupation, ca. AD 1-1000. Indigenous people residing at this site obtained chert locally and knapped it here to produce bifaces, scrapers, gravers, and other tools.

    Other archaeological field work such as Phase 1 surveys is expected during the summer.

    Qualifications

    This job involves archaeological fieldwork in the Albany-Saratoga region and applicants should expect to commute locally.
