Archeology Digital Media and Public Engagement Intern

Description and Duties

The National Park Service Northeast Archeological Resources Program (NARP) seeks an intern to join the digital media team. The intern will work closely with the Digital Media and Public Engagement Specialist to develop informational social media posts to enhance public awareness of archeological stewardship, create digital engagement opportunities, and participate in on-site public education archeological experiences through the Roving Exhibit and Archeology Lab (REAL) program in National Park Service (NPS) sites within the Northeast Region.

The intern will assist NARP by providing public access to archeology through social media engagement and website content creation. The intern will support NARP’s goals of collaboration with parks to help provide the public with information about the science of archeology, specific archeological projects, and the variety of tasks supported by NARP. In addition to digital media, the intern will collaborate with NARP archeologists and park resource managers to develop public engagement experiences and opportunities for park visitors to engage with archeological resources within National Park Units. The intern will test new methods for public outreach and engagement related to archeological projects and support the implementation of the Roving Exhibit and Archeology Laboratory, which will be traveling to different parks during the spring and summer of 2025.

The NARP office acts as a central resource for National Park sites throughout Interior Region 1 (Northeast Region), providing archeological support, protecting archeological resources, investigating suspected looting or vandalism, and overseeing scientific archeological research. The NARP office is located in Lowell, MA, but the intern can work remotely within the East Coast.

Duties include

  • Developing social media campaigns, including plans for holidays, heritage and identity months, and other special topics
  • Writing regular social media posts for NARP’s Facebook and Instagram accounts following NPS and NARP digital media guidelines
  • Creating digital engagement content, including articles, activities, and web pages
  • Collaborating with the Digital Media and Public Engagement Specialist to develop and implement public outreach programs
  • Working with regional parks and cultural resources staff to assist with archeological outreach and education efforts within the parks

Qualifications

Strong written and verbal communication skills are desired. Candidates who are familiar or have experience with basic archeological principles, methodologies, the identification of archeological material culture found in the Northeast Region, experience with the principles of cultural resources management, education, museum studies, and/or history will be given priority. Interns should be skilled in organization, time management, and working both in teams and on their own. Candidates must be able to pass a federal background check.

This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE. The successful applicants must be 30 years of age or younger (or 35 years or younger if a Veteran) when they begin the internship.
