Description and Duties

The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for a Research and Collection Technician position in the New York State Museum’s History Department. Under the direction of Chief Curator, History, the incumbent of this position will perform a variety of duties including procuring, identifying, documenting, and maintaining scientific and historical specimens, objects, and artifacts. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Serve as lead for collections-based projects;

Identify and catalog individual artifacts, objects, or oral histories;

Enter catalog and related data into electronic databases;

Conduct laboratory and field research while assisting with writing project reports;

Photograph objects, scan documents, and incorporate images into electronic databases;

Assist professional staff with exhibits, public programs, tours, researcher visits and requests, and other educational/research activities;

Process specimens and artifacts within collections, including wrapping, packing, cleaning, organizing, labeling, rehousing, and incorporating into NYSM storage, using NYSM standard practices; and

Collaborate with the Chief Curator (History), Senior Historian, or Museum Scientists on appropriate collections matters, as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Research and Collections Technician. Non-Competitive Appointment: A bachelor’s degree including or supplemented by 18 semester credit hours in archaeology, anthropology, history, or in one of the natural sciences (biology, zoology, geology) AND one year of experience assisting in scientific or historical research in the field or in artifact specimen care and maintenance in a laboratory or a museum.

Conditions of Employment

This will be a permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits.
