Description and Duties
The Cultural Resource Survey Program (CRSP; https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/research-collections/archaeology/crsp) of the New York State Museum is seeking seasonal archaeology field technicians for upcoming projects throughout New York State. This is a temporary position, with a term date no later than December 31, 2024.
Duties include participation in archaeological fieldwork for CRSP projects (perform reconnaissance survey and site examination and data recovery excavation at archaeological sites to all current Cultural Resource Management (CRM) professional standards); serve as field crew member or as crew chief as assigned; maintain professional field records; ensure proper use of vehicles and equipment; interact with the public. There may be potential for laboratory work (assist with laboratory artifact processing, including cleaning, organizing, labeling, and cataloging); enter field notes and other data into electronic databases.
Travel Monday through Friday (37.5 hours weekly) is required for most projects, with paid stays in single occupancy hotel rooms and Federal GSA rate per diem (at least $59 per night). Pay ranges from $17.14 to $21.22 per hour, based on education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field; prior archaeological field experience (field school and/or experience working in CRM); a valid driver’s license and/or access to reliable transportation or the ability to carpool from the Albany, New York region; at least one year field experience participating in Phase 1, 2, and/or 3 archaeological investigations (e.g., shovel test pit survey, excavation, monitoring) in New York or nearby areas.
